There are upcoming TV adaptations based on the Wizard of Oz stories each coming from four different US networks.
- Emerald City (NBC) – a dark reimagining of The Wizard of Oz described to be in the vein of Game of Thrones
- Dorothy (CBS) - a medical soap inspired by the characters and themes of The Wizard of Oz.
- Warriors of Oz (Syfy)– a fantasy-action reimagined mini-series of the classic story.
- Dorothy Must Die (CW) – this would prove to be most controversial of the upcoming adapations. Dorothy Must Die is based on an upcoming novel of that name by Danielle Page and developed by Heroes/Touch creator Tim Kring.
Dorothy Must Die would prove to be the most contentious of the four adaptations as it is about an aged Dorothy who has ruled Oz as a fascist dictator for decades “when another young woman from Kansas is swept up in a tornado and magically dropped into this war-torn Oz, our hero discovers a revolutionary underground of witches and enchanted beings only to learn that she is destined to lead their people in the fight to reclaim Oz from a power-hungry Dorothy’s ruthless clutches.”
